Preventing Seasonal Illnesses
Summertime is a great opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the warmer weather here in Wyoming! However, there are a few things that families should be mindful of in order to avoid summertime illnesses and injuries. Here are three of the most common summertime illnesses and how to prevent them:
1. Sunburn
Sunburn is one of the most common summertime injuries. It is important to always use sunscreen, even on cloudy days, and to reapply it often. Wear protective clothing, such as a hat and sunglasses, when spending extended periods of time outdoors. Seek shade whenever possible. If you do get sunburned, treat the affected area with cool compresses and moisturizing lotion.
Studies also show that just five blistering sunburns can substantially increase your risk of developing skin cancer. This is why protecting your skin is critical — especially in the summer months.
2. Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion is another common summertime illness, especially during heatwaves. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, headache, and fatigue. To prevent heat exhaustion, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, avoid extended periods of time outdoors in direct sunlight, and wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
If you start to experience symptoms of heat exhaustion, move to a cooler location and rest. Drink lots of fluids, especially water, and avoid alcohol.
3. Insect Bites
Insect bites are common in the summertime, as there are more insects out and about. To prevent insect bites, use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, and avoid perfumes or scented lotions. If you do get bitten by an insect, treat the bite with a cool compress and antihistamine cream.
