Advancements of 3D Mammography
Behind skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting American women, with 1 in 8 women developing it at some point in their adult lives. With this form of cancer being so prevalent, women need to have routine screenings to help detect cancerous tumors early on, ensuring the most effective care possible.
It is recommended that older women begin getting mammograms during their well-woman visits as a breast cancer screening. Thanks to advancements in technology. 3D mammography has been developed to help doctors better detect breast cancer signs. The health experts at St. John's Health are here to outline the benefits of 3D mammography over traditional mammograms.
What is a 3D Mammogram?
During a mammogram, a special machine is used to take X-ray images of the inside of the breast. During the imaging process, the breast is placed on a special plate and compressed in order to take detailed images of the breast tissue.
With 3D mammography, doctors are able to get a more detailed view of the breast tissue compared to traditional 2D mammograms. By allowing doctors to get views of the breast tissue from various angles, they are better able to detect signs of breast cancer in those with dense breast tissue. False positives are also less common with 3D mammograms.
Other Breast Cancer Screenings Between Exams
Between well-woman visits, it is important for women to check their breast tissue at home on a monthly basis to catch any abnormalities. The best way to do this is to perform a self-exam.
When checking your breast tissue, it is important to look out for any of the following as they can be early signs of breast cancer:
- Dimpling skin.
- Changes in color of the nipples.
- Lumps and knots.
- Thickening of the skin.
- Changes to one breast.
- Nipple discharge other than breast milk.
