St. John’s Medical Center is pleased to announce thatUS News and World Report designated St. John’s Living Center as a “Best Nursing Home” for 2018-2019. St. John’s Living Center is in the top 5% of all 15,000 nursing homes in the country, having earned the highest ratings in the subcategories that make up the overall rating.
US News rates nursing homes from “high performing” to “poor” in two categories: Overall and Short-Stay Rehabilitation. To be named a “Best Nursing Home,” a facility needs to be rated as “high performing” in one category and rated as “average” or better in the other. St. John’s Living Center was rated as “high performing” in both categories.
“These ratings validate the efforts we have taken to provide the highest quality care and living environment to our residents, whether they are here for long-term care or brief rehabilitation,” said St. John’s CEO Paul Beaupré, MD. “As we move forward with planning for our new long-term care facility, Sage Living, we look forward to continuing this outstanding level of care in an updated physical environment.”
The data that US News used are similar to the overall star ratings developed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), but the methodology to determine the ratings is not exactly the same. The US News list is even more selective. Only 1,844 nursing homes received an overall “high performing” rating by US News, as compared to 4,303 nursing homes that received a 5-star rating by CMS.
“This recognition is a testament to the commitment of our community, our staff (both at the Living Center and St. John's Health), our board of trustees, and the Foundation,” said Malenda Hoelscher, executive director of senior living at St. John’s Living Center. “Without them, it would be very challenging to have the success the Living Center has experienced in the areas of quality and outcomes, and to do so in both long-term care and short-stay rehabilitation.”

ABOUT US NEWS NURSING HOME RATINGS
The US News Overall Ratings assign each eligible nursing home a rating from high performing to poor. This rating evaluates the care of a wide range of resident conditions at the nursing home, including both long-term chronic care and shorter term rehabilitation. The data used to evaluate these homes come from the federal Nursing Home Compare program, and incorporate the nurse staffing, health inspection, and quality measures star ratings. In addition to these measures, nursing homes were assessed based on the appropriateness of the therapy minutes provided to their residents as well as the consistency of their reported nurse staffing across self-reported and payroll-based reporting systems. All facilities with an overall star rating in the July 2018 Nursing Home Compare data set and staffing ratings in either the April 2018 or July 2018 Nursing Home Compare data sets received a US News Overall Rating.
